Were you led to believe that period pain was "normal" and just part of the parcel?
I know I did and I suffered with awful period pain, nausea, fainting, dosing up naproxen and codeine each month to 'get through' until the next month when it returned yet again
It was miserable.
"The curse of womanhood" "Just what us women have to put up with" that's the messages I heard along side the media message of "strong women can do anything on their period". We were told to basically pretend it isn't happening. Those Always and Tampax adverts of a woman playing tennis in a little white skirt really twisted the knife in while I was on the sofa with my hot water bottle struggling.
It wasn't until much later on that I learnt period pain is not normal (common yes) and a sign from our body that something (hormonal or womb imbalance etc.) needs our attention.
That was a lightbulb revelation from me that gave me hope yet made me angry.
All this time I could have done something about it but I didn't know! It ingrained a message in me that was not true and I'm determined to pass on the truth to my girls.
I'd love to hear what messages you were given or picked up on around period pain?
